A BRIEF HISTORY
Ice boating, also known as hardwater sailing, originated in 18th-
century Holland as a means to transport goods over ice. Sailing
ice boats upwards of 100 mph was soon discovered as an enjoyable
pastime.
Hardwater sailing spread to the United States by the
mid-1800s, where it gained recognition as a sport for affluent
sailors.
In 1931, a more manageable ice boat was constructed, utilizing a smaller
frame structure: solely a main sail of much smaller proportions, front
steering, and an enclosed cockpit for two sailors rather than an open
platform. This boat, dubbed the "Skeeter," became widely available and
remains one of the largest fleets in the U.S. and Canada today.
The most popular class of ice boat in the world, however, is called the
"DN." As originally introduced in 1937 by the Detroit News, this small
ice boat can easily be built in a home workshop, thus opening the doors
to a wealth of adventurous sailors.
The foremost area for ice boating is within the Ice Belt, an area
perhaps 150 miles wide circling the globe near the 45th parallel. Ice
boaters sail in Montana, the Great Lakes, Ontario, New England and New
York-New Jersey, as well as through northern Europe into Russia.
